This Cape Cod residence sits atop a hill with views overlooking Nantucket Sound and Buzzards Bay. Part of a shingle style Cape Cod locality, the house borrows traditional Cape Cod forms and materials, adapting them for a contemporary life style and enabling the house to fit compatibly with the surrounding neighborhood homes. White cedar shingles siding weathering to a warm grey, red cedar shingle roofs, white painted trim, and fieldstone walls, are part of the Cape Cod architectural vocabulary used for the house. The owners of this residence wished to create a second home in the mountains of western Massachusetts where they could vacation with their two grown children. The rural environment and the use of the house as a vacation “cottage” suggested simple geometric shapes for its expression. Prototypical “modern” changes were made in a 1960s addition. The entire interior was removed and a second addition was designed with a hinge point that melds into the existing carriage house. CBT’s addition serves to unify the previous 1960s addition with the carriage house. Read More

Located in a rural area of southeastern Massachusetts, this house is sited to take advantage of views to a flanking river that meanders along its northern border. The plan of the house responds to the shifting direction of the river with spaces shifting to orient to the differing views. The composition of the house is expressed as a series of small-connected structures, which help reduce the scale of the house and recall indigenous farm buildings prevalent in the area. Read More
