CBT designed the expanded Lower School for Dorchester’s music-centered Conservatory Lab Charter School, serving students in kindergarten through second grade.
Defined by a clerestory-edged roof that fills the building with natural light, the expansion gives the school a welcoming new presence along Hancock Street while adding a much-needed gathering hall and cafeteria. Throughout the addition, the design reflects the school’s mission to empower young learners through music and hands-on discovery. A colorful instrument mural creates a strong sense of arrival and school pride, while frosted glazing films with recognizable melodies provide privacy and moments of delight. Colorful floor stripes guide students to learning areas, turning circulation into a playful journey. Natural light, wood-look linoleum, and warm, tackable wall surfaces support a healthy, biophilic environment that promotes focus and wellbeing.
CBT also renovated the existing two-story, 1950s-era mid-century modern building, delivering key improvements such as fully updated classrooms, new children’s restrooms with direct classroom access, and a reinforced connection to the public-facing addition. Between the new and existing structures, a fully accessible exterior courtyard creates a protected outdoor play area away from the busy street.
Construction began in summer 2024 and was completed in fall 2025, supported by a phased construction and swing-space strategy that allowed students to remain in school throughout the process.
