CBT Wins Two 2023 Rethinking the Future Awards!

Two CBT designs have been selected from more than one thousand international entries across 40+ countries to be honored with 2023 Rethinking the Future Awards! The Rethinking the Future Awards are a competitive, international showcase of innovation and future-ready ideas, recognizing creative excellence and inspiring architecture and design from around the world. The Sudbury received a First Award in the Housing category and Autonomous Block was named runner-up in the Urban Design Concept category.

The Sudbury, a new 486-unit, 600,000-square-foot residential building in Boston’s Bulfinch Triangle, introduces the first dramatic architectural move of many to transform an antiquated edifice – the monolithic, 2,300-car Government Center Garage – into a connected, walkable neighborhood. The first phase of the Bulfinch Crossing Redevelopment, The Sudbury injects new residential life where six historic neighborhoods converge for the first time in nearly 50 years. With crafted details deferential to their architectural context and a slender, expressive form, The Sudbury introduces an authentic local character which seamlessly mends surrounding urban fabric while finally claiming a place for this historic district along the Boston skyline.

Autonomous Block is a new urban block prototype challenging traditional, stagnant, and inflexible city-block typology. The ultimate “pop-up” host, the Autonomous Block concept provides a dynamic ground plane that transforms the urban realm through integrated technologies, accommodating a wide range of pedestrian and vehicular activities. Autonomous Block’s elements are an expanded public realm, curb-less streets, moveable street furniture, and mobile program containers – supporting users from retail to daycare to you-name-it. Each Block morphs as needed, shifting from pop-up weekend village environment to robust weekday mix for urbanites to customized public event space.
