200 Newbury

200 Newbury Street was one of the first new commercial structures in a two decade period to rise along the most distinguished retail corridor in Boston, indeed in the country. Surrounded by four- and five-story masonry row houses that have been converted to retail use, 200 Newbury replaced a surface parking lot with a Nike superstore on the first three floors and offices for the project’s owner and developer on the building’s top floor. Rather than imitating the style of the buildings around it, the design offers a dynamic image appropriate for a national retailer, yet is clearly compatible in terms of its scale, massing, and materials and with the heavily regulated Back Bay National Historic District.
