CBT completed the design for a new $47M, 110,000 square-foot facility that provides Fitchburg students with state of the art laboratory, research, and classroom facilities in a single location and brings definition and a new identity to an existing quad, making an important campus connection. The complex supports the Unviersity's growing science program that has experienced a 70% increase in science faculty and a 300% increase in science major enrollment in the past 12 years. 

Similar to many science buildings constructed in the United States during the 1960s, Fitchburg State’s exisitng Condike Science building was comprised of a center corridor with laboratories, classrooms, and faculty offices on each side. The relatively narrow 43,700-square-foot facility is located at the northern end of the academic quadrangle on the 31-acre campus. Immediately adjacent to Condike is the 22,000-square-foot Sanders Administration Building.

CBT was originally commissioned in 2006 to provide a study for a new modern science complex, assessing new buildings as well as renovation to existing buildings. In 2008, the state approved a bond bill funding the project and we are currently reassessing the program and options to meet this new budget. This study concluded in the spring of 2009 with a new program and concept design document.

The new addition, comprising approximately 54,700 square feet, includes Biology and Chemistry teaching and research laboratories, classrooms, and support functions. The renovated building provides space for Physics and Geo-physical sciences, classrooms, and faculty offices.

The design team utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the Phase 1 study phase. BIM was extensively used in dynamic exploration and extraction of various programming information for the different design iterations. The 3D visualization tools facilitated discussion and enhanced client communication and understanding of the different design options.
